Mtn Power O out of Strong I Wing is a gap scheme power run that pulls the backside guard through the hole while the fullback leads through as the primary blocker at the point of attack. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with double team combos at the point of attack while the fullback and pulling guard climb to the second level to seal off linebackers. The X receiver runs a vertical route up the numbers as a decoy to hold the corner, but this is not a pass concept, it is a downhill run designed to get the halfback moving north through the power gap. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the point of attack and read the fullback's block, then bounce outside or cut back based on how the second level defenders flow.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run-fit alignment with linebackers stacked tight to the box, since that signals they are keyed on the power run and may blow up the pulling guard. Watch the strong safety depth: if he is sitting at eight yards or closer, he is likely a run support defender ready to fill the alley against this Wing formation. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker or the strong safety to shoot the gap and meet the fullback before he can seal the edge, which disrupts the timing of the pull. This concept struggles against a hard edge set from the defensive end combined with an aggressive linebacker blitz through the play side gap, since it collapses the lane before the guard arrives. If the defense shows single high safety with corners playing off, expect heavy run support, so look for cutback lanes if the backside defensive end crashes down too fast.
Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to establish the run game with a heavy personnel look before mixing in play-action shots.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has an extra defender stacked in the box, motion the fullback or check to Mtn Zone Wk to avoid running into a numbers disadvantage.
Pair this with PA Mtn Power and PA Power O in the same play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the run action and the boot or rollout pass off identical formation and personnel.
Attack light boxes against nickel or dime packages since the Wing alignment forces base personnel matchups if the defense does not adjust, giving your fullback a favorable blocking angle.
On the stick, patience is key, let the pulling guard get in front before committing to a lane, and use the hit stick sparingly since this is a between the tackles power concept built on angles, not speed to the outside.
