PA Spot out of Strong I Wing uses a play-action fake to sell the run before working a classic Spot concept to the closed side. The X receiver runs a corner route stretching the deep third while the TE and slot work an underneath hitch and quick out, creating the traditional flat-curl-corner triangle that defines Spot. Backside, a single receiver runs a dig style route breaking inside, giving you a two-level answer against zone drops. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, and the primary read progression starts with the flat/hitch underneath, works up to the corner route if the cornerback bites on run action, then comes back to the backside dig if the underneath defenders sink deep.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since Cover 3 rotation is what this play is built to punish. Watch the flat defender (usually a corner or outside linebacker) after the snap: if he widens to the hitch or flat route immediately, the corner route behind him will be wide open. Key the play-action linebacker discipline. If linebackers step up hard on the run fake, the shallow crossing and dig routes will have soft underneath windows. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where the corner has deep help, since the corner route runs into a waiting safety. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback, as that is the most common way defenders take away the underneath completions and force you into the low percentage corner throw.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense expects run based on the Strong I Wing personnel and heavy box look.
Check safety depth pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties rotate to one high after the snap, that confirms Cover 3 and tells you the corner route will be open once the flat defender widens.
Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route if you are facing a Mike linebacker who sits in the shallow hole zone, since that clears the underlying window for your dig read.
Pair this with PA FB Flat and PA Sprint HB Flat in the same set to keep linebackers honest on the same run action, then hit PA Spot when they start jumping the flat routes.
Against aggressive slot corners playing press, motion is not needed here since the route stems naturally clear the leverage, just trust the timing and let the play-action hold the second level.
