Read Option out of Shotgun Wing Stack is a true zone read run play built to attack the edge with a give or keep decision baked in. The QB reads the play side end or OLB off the mesh point with the RB, with the offensive line blocking down and away from the read defender to create the natural conflict. This is a run play at its core, and the diagram shows a clean gap scheme with no route concepts drawn, meaning the entire design lives and dies on the QB's ability to correctly read the unblocked defender at the snap.
Assign your best athlete at defensive end or OLB to play the read defender and stay square in the backfield rather than crashing upfield Spy the QB with a linebacker if you suspect the CPU or opponent user will pull the ball on designed keeps Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with disciplined edge defenders can shut this play down by staying home and forcing an inside handoff into a stacked box Watch for the offense stacking extra blockers to the play side, that pre-snap tell often signals which direction the read is designed to hit If the defense shows a heavy blitz with both edges crashing, the QB pull read becomes very live, so contain rushers must maintain outside leverage
Use this on early downs in run heavy personnel counts to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive
Check the defensive end or OLB alignment pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on tendency you want to pull the ball and get to the edge every time
Pair this with PA Read and PA Jailbreak Screen from the same Wing Stack set since both plays start with the identical mesh action and freeze second level defenders
Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill, manually pull the ball immediately rather than trusting the stick read animation, since human reaction speed beats the CPU logic
Best deployed on 2nd and short or 1st and 10 to stay ahead of the chains and force the defense to respect both the give and the keep
