Double Corner out of Shotgun Wing Stack (12 personnel) shows a two-man route concept to the right and a single deep route to the left. On the right side, one receiver runs a quick out/flat route while the other releases underneath and breaks outward to a corner route that stretches the sideline vertically, creating a natural high low read on that half of the field. To the left, the lone receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline after selling a vertical stem. This is a man beater concept built around leverage and separation, with the corner route attacking cornerbacks who play with inside leverage or trail technique, and the primary read progression starts with the underneath out/flat route before working up to the corner route on the right side, then checking the backside comeback if the defense rotates coverage to that side.
Defensive Reads
Watch cornerback alignment before the snap, if the corner playing over the corner route is showing inside leverage or press man technique, that route wins outside on the sideline. Check safety depth and rotation, a single high safety who cheats toward the corner route side can undercut the deep throw, forcing the quarterback back to the flat or comeback route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route since the receiver can stack the defender vertically then break outside for separation. Zone coverage, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, can shut this down if the deep defenders sink into their zones and the flat defender stays disciplined, taking away both the underneath and the corner throw. User controlled defenders who key the flat route immediately and jump the route can bait the quarterback into an interception, so watch for lurking defenders sitting in the throwing lane before committing to the corner route.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two high safety shells since the corner route on the right needs room to work outside without a deep safety sitting on top. Use the flat route as your first read against man coverage to bait the underneath defender before working to the corner route for the explosive gain. Against zone coverage, hot route the flat runner into a shallow drag or option route to sit in the void created by the corner route pulling the flat defender vertically. This play pairs well with Mesh Spot or Ohio Spacing in your play calling sequence since those concepts attack underneath zones and can set up defenses to overplay short routes, opening up the corner route shot play later in a series. Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium to long situations where you need a explosive gain and can afford to let the corner route develop downfield.
