Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Stack is a base zone run play with 12 personnel, showing a tight formation with a wing stack to the closed side and the RB offset in the backfield. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level based on defensive flow, while the tight ends account for edge defenders and force players. The primary read is the RB following the play side double team and reading the frontside linebacker fit, deciding to bend the run back inside or press it outside based on how the defense flows.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: linebackers stacked tight to the line signal a quick downhill fit that can be gashed if the RB presses the backside cutback lane. Identify one-high versus two-high safety shells, since a single high safety often means an extra run defender in the box, making the frontside double team block critical to spring the run. Key the play side defensive end's first step; if he crashes hard inside on the zone action, bounce the run outside using the wing TE's block as the lead. User-controlled linebackers who fast flow to the play side leave the backside cutback wide open, so be ready to redirect the RB against overaggressive pursuit. Blitzing linebackers off the edge or through the A gap pre-snap can blow up the zone track quickly, so if you see a hard crash look to check into a quick pass or audible if possible.
Check the box count pre-snap and confirm you have enough blockers versus the front, since Inside Zone loses value against overloaded fronts with extra defenders in the box.
Use the wing tight end's alignment to identify if the defense is showing an odd or even front, then let the RB's aiming point adjust to the bubble in the line.
Motion the wing TE across pre-snap to bait linebackers into showing blitz or coverage rotation before the snap, giving you a clearer post-snap read.
Pair this play with Power O and Read Option from the same set so defenses cannot sit on one gap scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than sub packages built to stop the pass.
