The diagram shows 12 personnel with two receivers stacked wide left and the fullback aligned behind the RB, with the interior line pulling to trap the first defender inside the tackle box while the RB takes a quick handoff and reads the trap block to hit the crease. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, so the primary read is the running back keying the trap blocker to decide between the A gap cutback or bouncing outside if the defensive tackle crashes down too hard.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive tackle alignment before the snap, a 3-technique or shaded nose tackle crashing hard is exactly what the trap block is designed to counter. Identify if the linebackers are reading run fast, since a disciplined Mike linebacker who stays home in the A gap can blow up the trap before it develops. Check for a stacked box with an extra run defender at depth of 4 to 5 yards, this look can clog the cutback lane and force the RB to bounce outside where trap plays are less effective. Look at defensive line stunts and games, since a line that slants away from the trap direction can actually create a bigger natural crease for the ball carrier. Against blitz heavy fronts, key whether the interior rush comes free before the trap blocker can get across, if so this play is vulnerable to negative yardage on the snap.
Usage Tips
Run this out of 12 personnel to bait linebackers into thinking its play action or a heavier run set, then punish light boxes with the trap.
Check the defensive tackle alignment pre-snap, if he is shaded hard into the A gap the trap block becomes automatic and the RB should stick to the called hole.
Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, since the trap works best when the defense is not stacking the box for a clear run down.
Pair 0 1 Trap with Inside Zone and Power O from the same set so defenses cannot key run direction based on formation tendencies alone.
Sequence this after a couple of PA Read or Read Option calls from the same personnel to slow down linebacker run fits and freeze second level defenders.
