Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Shotgun Wing Stack with 12 personnel, showing a stacked TE alignment to the left and a tight bunch of linemen with the RB offset behind the QB. The blocking scheme is a standard inside zone track, with the offensive line stepping in unison to create a natural rushing lane while the backside TE and wing TE seal the edge. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-heavy fronts, with the primary read being the playside combo block and cutback lane based on how the defensive tackles and linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front relative to the stacked TE side, since overloaded fronts to the play side kill the cutback window. Watch linebacker depth: if both linebackers are sitting shallow and square, they can fill gaps quickly and shut down the interior lanes. Post-snap, key the playside defensive tackle's hands and hips to see if he is getting driven off the ball or holding his ground, which dictates whether the RB should stick to the called gap or bounce outside. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill immediately after the snap often signal a diagnosed run, so look for the cutback lane developing behind the flow. This run struggles against stacked eight-man boxes or aggressive gap-shooting nano blitzes, so if the defense shows heavy pressure alignment pre-snap, consider audibling to a quick pass instead.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a numbers disadvantage.

Use the stacked TE alignment to identify if the defense is showing man or zone, since a hard rotation to the stack often signals blitz or man coverage that opens cutback lanes.

Hot route the backside TE into a chip or seal block if you see an unblocked edge defender crashing down hard on the mesh point.

Pair this with Read Option or Power O from the same Wing Stack set to keep the defense guessing between zone run action and gap schemes.

Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to stay on schedule and set up play-action shots like PA Read or PA Slide later in the drive.
