Double Cross out of Shotgun Wing Stack is a dual crosser concept built to attack man coverage with natural rub picks. The two inside receivers run crossing routes at the same depth, one breaking left to right and the other right to left underneath, while the backside X runs a deep corner route up the sideline and the outside receiver on the crosser side pushes vertical up the numbers. The lone running back stays in as a check release or shoots a shallow drag underneath both crossers, giving the quarterback a layered read from the shallow drag to the two crossers and finally the deep corner shot. Primary progression starts with the crossers working the middle of the field, then works out to the deep corner route if a defender bites underneath or if you see a one on one shot on the boundary.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage defenders who stay attached through the crossers routes without a safety over the top are the biggest tell that the rub concept is working, so watch for that natural pick to spring a receiver open in the intermediate zone. Zone defenses that sit their linebackers in shallow drop zones can undercut both crossing routes, so key on linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals they are sitting on the crossers rather than covering the middle voids. Cover 3 shells with a deep middle safety will squeeze the throwing windows on the crossers and make the deep corner route the better answer, so read the safety's leverage before committing to the middle of the field. User controlled defenders playing lurk in the shallow zone can jump the underachieving drag route or the first crosser, so look for that lurk defender sitting flat footed in the passing lane before throwing across the middle. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will pressure the quarterback before the deep corner route develops, so if you see a pre-snap overload look to get the ball out to the first crosser immediately.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to second and long when you have room to let the crossers develop, since both routes take a beat to clear traffic before they are throwing windows. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage by looking for tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since the natural rub from the crossers will create separation against man defenders. If you see a two high shell with soft corners, hot route the shallow drag into a quick option route so you have a faster underneath answer against zone drops. Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Levels in the same set to keep defenders guessing between shallow crossing concepts and traditional levels reads, forcing linebackers to freeze on their run fits. Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the first crosser quickly since the deep corner route takes too long to develop if pressure gets home.
