Defensive Reads

Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting flat in a lurk position near the stack alignment, as a smart user player will jump the screen and blow it up for a loss. Post-snap, key on defensive end and outside linebacker containment discipline, if they stay home and read screen instead of rushing upfield they can string this out. Man coverage with underneath linebackers in trail technique on the stack receivers is the best counter, since it eliminates the blocking angles before they develop. Blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge can actually help the screen if those defenders overrun the play, so watch the edge rush angle to decide whether to trust the screen or check to the clear-out route.

Call this on early downs or second and short when defenses are likely to sit in a soft zone shell and drop underneath coverage off the line.
Check the flow of the linebackers pre-snap, if they are showing blitz or crashing hard downhill this play loses value because the screen needs time to set up blockers.
Use the vertical clear-out route as a hot route answer if you see man coverage or a corner pressing the stack, since the screen alone will not beat tight man leverage.
