Stick out of Shotgun Wing Stack sends both outside receivers on deep corner routes stretching the sideline while the inner slot runs a vertical seam and the running back releases up the middle on a check release route. This is a classic Stick concept variant that stresses the flanks vertically instead of running the traditional shallow flat and stick combo, making it a zone beater designed to attack cover 3 and cover 4 shells by overloading the deep quarters. The primary read progression starts with the vertical seam route up the middle, then works outside to the corner routes if the safety rotates away, with the running back check release as the underneath answer against a blitz.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals he is sinking under the seam route, which forces you to hold the throw or check it down to the running back. Watch both corners at the snap, if they bail into a deep zone drop the corner routes to the boundary will have room to work against cover 3 or cover 4. Identify any user controlled defender flashing into the middle of the field, since a lurking user in the seam will jump the vertical route and bait a turnover. Man coverage with press corners tends to shut this play down because the corner routes get contested at the top and the seam route has no natural rub to create separation. Watch for a blitz off the edge, if the offensive line cannot pick it up you need to get the ball out quickly to the running back check release before the seam route fully develops.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since the two corner routes to the boundary will only separate cleanly against zone shells with soft corners. Look for single high safety looks and attack the seam route first since it splits the difference between the hash defenders in cover 3. Hot route the running back to a flat route or check him down as a safety valve if you diagnose a blitz look presnap. Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Curl Post from the same Wing Stack set so the defense cannot sit on the seam read after seeing it once. Best called on second and medium to long or on early downs when you want a explosive play shot without fully exposing yourself to the run.
