Breakdown

Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Wing Stack sends the two receivers on the left into a classic mesh crossing pattern underneath while the inside receiver settles into a spot route near the sticks, and the boundary receiver on the right runs a deep vertical route that breaks upfield after an initial angle release. The backfield stays in to pass protect, making this a pure dropback passing concept rather than a run or play-action design. This is primarily a man beater since the mesh traffic forces defenders to fight through picks, but the spot route underneath also gives you a answer against zone drops, with the shallow crosser as the first read, the spot as the safety valve, and the deep vertical as the home run shot if the defense sells out on the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the vertical route is in press or off man, since press coverage makes the deep shot much tougher to complete. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow drops mean the mesh crossers will have room to work underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability, the mesh concept combined with the deep vertical route can beat it easily if the quarterback has time. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender squeezing the mesh routes and a deep third defender staying on top of the vertical route is the best way to shut this play down. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, since a lurking defender there can jump the mesh routes and create a turnover opportunity.

Usage Tips

Read the flat and underneath zone defenders before the snap to decide if you want to work the mesh side or click straight to the deep vertical route.

Against man coverage, trust the mesh crossers to rub off defenders and look for a natural pick that springs one receiver open in the shallow zone.

Use the spot route as your checkdown when linebackers sink into intermediate zones and clog the crossing routes.

If the corner on the vertical route is playing off man or you see single high safety look, take the deep shot early before the pass rush closes the pocket.

Pair this play with Levels or Ohio Spacing in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath concepts and shots down the field.
