The primary read progression is peek at the run fit first, then flow to the swing route if the alley defender or slot flows inside with the run action, making this a light box and zone beater rather than a heavy man beating design.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers cheating toward the swing side presnap, which signals the defense is sitting on the RPO and daring you to run. If the slot defender or flat corner sinks into the throwing lane immediately after the snap, that is a sign of a zone drop designed to take away the swing. Blitzes off the edge on the swing side are the biggest threat since the QB has less time to make the peek read before the run window closes. A single high safety with man coverage underneath usually means the box is manageable for the run, favoring the handoff over the RPO throw. If the defense shows a hard crash toward the run action, user the QB decisively into the swing before the flat defender can react and close space.
Usage Tips
Use the presnap motion to identify if the defense rotates or bumps a linebacker, since that tells you whether the box is light enough to hand it off.
Key the flow of the second level defender closest to the swing route, if he steps up to play the run the swing is wide open in space.
This play works best on early downs or third and short since the defense has to respect the run action before the RPO read develops.
