Mtn PA Stutter Go is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Split Slot Offset that sells run action before releasing three vertical stems. The two inside receivers (yellow and red) push straight upfield with the yellow route showing a hitch-and-go stutter release near the top of the stem to freeze defenders, while the outside receiver runs a deep drift route breaking flat across the field for a horizontal stretch. The fullback or in-line blocker stays in to protect on the play fake, and the primary read progression starts with the stutter go receiver to see if the corner bites on the hesitation, then works to the vertical red seam route, and finally checks down to the drifting outside route if both verticals are covered. This is a man beater designed to exploit aggressive corners and undisciplined safeties on deep vertical shots.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, single high alignments are more vulnerable to the vertical stutter go shot. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, if they play tight man press without safety help over the top, the stutter go double move should create separation. Post-snap, key the play side safety's first step, if he bites down on the run fake, the seam and stutter go routes will be wide open behind him. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking underneath the vertical routes, a spot dropper sitting on the seam route can jump the throw if the quarterback does not manipulate him with eyes or pump fakes. This play struggles against disciplined zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where deep defenders stay patient and do not respect the play-action fake, since the double move loses its effectiveness against zone drops.
Call this on early downs or second and short when defenses expect run action to sell the play fake convincingly.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety shaded to one side, target the stutter go route away from that help.
Use the stutter go hot route timing to your advantage by pausing your throw stick input slightly after the break to let the double move actually freeze the corner in man coverage.
Pair this with Mtn Stutter Go or Mtn PA Y Cross earlier in a drive so defenders start respecting the run fake and vertical shots, then hit this play when they bite on run action.
Against zone shells, prioritize the drifting outside route since it settles into soft spots behind underneath defenders and in front of deep zone drops.
