RPO Alert Bubble is a run pass option built off inside zone with a bubble screen alert to the field. The offensive line and HB execute the zone blocking scheme working playside while the slot receiver runs a quick bubble route behind the line of scrimmage as the pre snap alert. On the backside, a receiver runs a deep crossing route working from the numbers all the way across the formation to stretch the defense horizontally if the defense sells out on the run or bubble. The primary read progression starts with the QB reading the flat defender or overhang defender: if he crashes down on the run, throw the bubble immediately, if he sits or widens, hand off the zone run, and if the defense rotates hard to that side, work the deep backside crosser late.

Defensive Reads

Zone coverage shells with a hard corner squat on the bubble side shut down the RPO throw, forcing the offense into a low value handoff against a stacked front. Look for late safety rotation toward the bubble side as a tell that the defense is selling out on the RPO, which opens up the deep crossing route on the backside for a big gain if the QB progresses through his reads.

Usage Tips

Use pre snap motion or a quick glance to the flat defender to confirm whether this is a run or bubble read before the snap.

If the defense shows two high safeties with soft corners, favor the bubble since the alert defender is often lighter in coverage.

Against aggressive blitz looks with the slot corner or overhang crashing the box, get the ball out fast on the bubble to punish the numbers advantage.
