RPO Alert Out is a run pass option out of Shotgun Bunch Y-Flex that pairs an inside run look with a two man read on the backside. The bunch receiver runs an out breaking route to the flat while the adjacent receiver climbs vertically up the seam, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch to read off the flat defender. The backside X receiver runs a deep comeback style route working from the numbers back toward the sideline, giving you a true alert throw if the defense sells out to stop the run or the underneath RPO read. Primary progression starts with the run/pass read on the flat defender for the out and seam combo, then works to the backside comeback as the alert if the box is loaded.

Defensive Reads

Zone defenses that sit their flat defender at the line get gashed by the seam runner sitting in the soft spot behind him. Man coverage with no safety help over the top opens up the backside alert comeback for an explosive gain. Watch for a linebacker crashing hard downhill at the snap, that is your key to pull the ball and throw instead of handing it off. Cover 2 shells with the corner sitting on the out route will bait the quarterback into a pick if he does not check the alert route first. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the best matchup for this play since the RPO mesh point forces a fast decision before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Check the flat defender pre snap to decide if the out route will be open before the snap even happens.

Use this on early downs to keep defenses honest against both the run and the quick pass game.

If the defense shows a hard down safety or heavy box look, pull the ball immediately and throw the backside alert comeback for a big chunk gain.

Pair this with HB Choice or Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect the run fake every time you break the huddle.

Hot route the seam runner into a shallow drag against man coverage if you see the corner playing tight outside technique.
