Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since it dictates whether the post or the Y-Corner route is the priority throw. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If they step up hard on the play-action fake, the drag and shallow crosser will be wide open in the intermediate zone. Post-snap, key the deep half or deep third defender's break. If he jumps the corner route, the post should be sitting behind him in the void. Man coverage with a single high safety is the ideal shell to attack since the post-corner combo forces the defender to choose one route to cover. This play struggles against a hard two deep shell with disciplined cornerbacks who can sink under the corner route and rob the post, so avoid calling it against Cover 2 or Cover 4 with aggressive user lurk on the deep crosser.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) so the play-action fake carries real threat and linebackers bite on the run look.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Against a single high safety the post route has a bigger throwing window since the corner route occupies the deep half defender.

Against two-high shells, prioritize the Y-Corner route since it attacks the seam before the safety can rotate over the top.

If the defense shows man coverage with no safety help, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route to create more separation against trail technique.
