Orbit Smash Whip lines up out of Shotgun Bunch Spread Nasty with pre-snap orbit motion out of the backfield, sending the motion man across to the far side on a shallow drag/return route. From the bunch, one receiver runs a corner route (red) stretching the deep outside, another runs a whip route that breaks inside then snaps back outside underneath the corner, and the third receiver clears out on a deep in-cut over the middle. The running back releases into a flat route underneath, giving the quarterback a designed smash concept read of high-low stretch on the boundary corner: the primary read progression starts with the corner-whip smash combo attacking two-deep shells, then works down to the flat and the drag/return underneath as checkdown options. This is a man and Cover 2 beater play, not a run or screen.
Watch for two safeties splitting the field pre-snap, since Cover 2 corners sinking under the deep corner route open up the whip and the flat underneath. Key the flat defender and cornerback leverage after the snap, if the corner jumps the whip route the deep corner ball becomes the primary window. Man coverage with underneath linebackers trailing the orbit motion man is a green light to hit the drag or return route for a quick gain if the corner is playing off the receiver. A hard corner blitz or nano blitz off the edge disrupts the timing of the corner-whip combo, so check the flat and quick game options immediately if you see extra rushers crashing off the bunch side. Sitting linebackers or a robber defender in the middle of the field can jump the drag or in-cut route, so if you see a lurking defender sink into that zone, look opposite to the flat or corner instead.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two-deep safeties or a single high shell, since this play is built specifically to attack Cover 2 with the corner-whip smash combo.
Use the orbit motion to bait linebackers into flowing with the back and confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the motion man's leverage tells you if you have a favorable matchup on the drag.
If the corner sits low expecting the whip, hot route the corner route receiver to sit down on a comeback, or trust the whip to settle underneath for an easy completion against soft zone drops.
Pair this play with Orbit Fork Whip and Orbit Shallow Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing on motion direction while dressing up the same route stems.
Best called on second and medium to second and long where you want a defined high-low read and a built-in checkdown to the flat or drag if the smash combo is covered.
