Shotgun Ace is the 12 personnel workhorse set in the Shotgun family, aligning one running back next to the quarterback with two tight ends and two wide receivers spread across the field. Unlike Shotgun Bunch or Trips looks that stack bodies to one side, Ace balances the formation with a tight end attached to the line and the second tight end flexed, giving you a true two by two distribution that forces the defense to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. That balance is the whole point: safeties cannot cheat a strength, and you get clean run keys against both four man and five man fronts.
The 12 personnel grouping is what makes this set dangerous in competitive play. Defenses that answer 12 personnel with base or big nickel put a linebacker or slower safety on your flexed tight end, and Ace isolates that matchup on route concepts like TE Attack, TE Under, and Inside Cross. If the opponent counters with nickel or dime to cover the tight end, you flip to the run game where Inside Zone, Power Read, and 0 1 Trap punish undersized boxes with an extra blocker attached. That constant either/or pressure is what separates Ace from lighter Shotgun sets that telegraph pass.
The play art here leans heavily into RPO and play-action concepts, which is why the Gadget tag applies. RPO Peek Slant, RPO Zone Peek, Mtn RPO Read Slide, and Mtn RPO Alert Y Flat let you read a defender post-snap instead of guessing pre-snap, while PA Inverted Veer, PA Read, PA Comebacks, and PA Shot use the run threat to freeze linebackers and open intermediate windows. Add QB Blast, QB Zone, and Read Option and you have a full option package from a set that can also line up and run downhill power.
Read the box before the snap: if the defense shows six or more in the box with single high, run the RPO peek concepts and take the slant or hitch off the leverage read rather than handing off into pressure.
Against two deep safeties, live in the run game with Inside Zone, Power Read, and 0 1 Trap, then use PA Read and PA Comebacks on second and medium once linebackers start crashing.
Hot route the flexed tight end to a drag or slant when you diagnose man coverage, and motion the receiver across to confirm man versus zone before committing to the throw.
Use Curl Flats and Hitch Corners on third and six to nine against Cover 3, targeting the curl behind the flat defender and using the corner route to hold the deep third.
Set up HB Slip Screen and PA FL Screen only after you have established the interior run and shown play-action, and check the linebacker depth pre-snap so you do not throw into a user sitting in the alley.
Block your tight ends or slide protect when facing repeat A gap pressure, then hit QB Zone or QB Blast to punish an emptied box.
