HB Quick Base

Breakdown

HB Quick Base is a Dive run out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel, with the RB aligned in the backfield next to the QB and both TEs tight to the formation for extra blocking gaps. The diagram shows a straight downhill dive path for the HB through the middle of the line, relying on the interior line and both TEs to seal running lanes rather than a stretch or zone bounce. This is a pure inside run play with no route concept attached, so the primary read is the same as any dive: identify the first crease off the double TE surface and hit it decisively before backside pursuit closes.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders against the double TE surface. If the defense has six or more in the box, this dive loses its numbers advantage and should be checked out of. Watch linebacker depth. Linebackers sitting shallow at four yards or closer are keying run and will fill the dive lane immediately. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker or a safety down to add a body to the point of attack, since the play design only has interior linemen and TEs blocking. This run struggles against gap-and-a-half fronts or defenses that stack the A and B gaps with a nose and both defensive tackles. It beats light boxes and defenses playing off-coverage or two-high shells that leave only four in the box to respect the pass options in the rest of the set.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when you have a numbers advantage in the box, especially against base fronts that stack only four defenders inside.

Use pre-snap motion or a TE shift to confirm run fits before the snap, since the double TE look often draws linebackers into tighter alignment that telegraphs the blitz.

Pair this with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the dive without conceding the quick throw behind it.

Save this play for short yardage or when you need to establish tempo, then counter with Power Read or PA Inverted Veer once the defense starts crashing hard on the dive.

Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages with extra defenders in the box unless you have committed to a hard count to draw an offsides.
