Breakdown

0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel is a designed interior run that pulls a blocker across the formation to trap the first defender inside the tackle box, letting the down blocks wash the front down while the puller kicks out or seals the crease. The diagram shows the QB handing off to the HB on a quick downhill angle behind a five man front with no route concepts drawn, confirming this is a pure gap scheme run play rather than any pass, RPO, or screen look. The primary read is the trap block: the HB presses the mesh point and reads whether the pulling blocker springs him inside or if the flow dictates bouncing outside the trap block.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the defensive tackle alignment inside the trap gap, since a shaded or head up DT with quick get off can beat the puller and blow up the play before the crease forms. Key the middle linebacker's depth and downhill trigger, since a linebacker sitting too far off the ball gives the HB extra room to work through the trap lane untouched. Watch for user controlled defensive linemen crashing hard down the line, since a disciplined defender who reads the pulling blocker and stays home can string this play out to the sideline. This run struggles against interior stack fronts and heavy nose tackle alignments that clog both A gaps, so look for those front adjustments as a sign the trap will not have a lane. Zone blitzes and stunts that loop a linebacker into the trap gap right as the puller arrives are especially effective at killing this concept, so respect delayed pressure looks from odd stack or bear fronts.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are showing base fronts, since heavy sub packages and odd fronts can clog the trap lane before the puller gets there.

Check the box count pre-snap and audible away from six or seven man boxes with a jamming defensive tackle sitting right in the trap path, since that alignment kills the pulling blocker's angle.

Pair this with Inside Zone and Power Read from the same Ace Shotgun set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes off similar formation and personnel looks, making linebackers hesitate on their fills.

Use play action shots like PA Read or PA Inverted Veer later in a series after this play has hit a few times, since linebackers who start crashing down to stop the trap become vulnerable to run action passing.

Avoid calling this into aggressive gap blitz packages unless you have a hot route or sim call ready, since a fast defensive tackle penetrating the trap gap before the puller arrives blows this up for a loss.
