Power Read is a run-first option play out of Shotgun Ace with 12 personnel. The diagram shows the HB running a lateral path away from the QB while the QB reads the play-side defensive end, with the offensive line executing a power blocking scheme up front. This is a Read Option run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, since it attacks the defensive end's crash or contain decision rather than a coverage shell. The primary read progression starts with the QB keying the unblocked edge defender: give the ball on the power path if he crashes down the line, or pull and run if he stays wide.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive end alignment before the snap, if he is playing outside contain with a wide base, expect the QB pull read. If linebackers are stacked tight to the box with no extra hat outside, the power scheme has a numbers advantage and should hit hard downhill. User the play-side defensive end or outside linebacker as the primary key defender, since his crash-or-contain decision dictates whether the ball stays with the HB or the QB. Be alert for a lurking linebacker sitting in the mesh area, as a disciplined defender who stays home on the option can blow up both the give and the keep. Stacked fronts or a spy assigned to the QB neutralize this play, so if you see extra defenders sitting inside with no overcommitment, expect this run to get shut down at the line.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when defenses expect a base run front. Check the defensive end's alignment pre-snap, if he is sitting wide or reading the mesh point every time, this is your green light to run Power Read repeatedly and gash him with the give. Pair this with QB Blast or Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple option run looks off similar formation shifts. If the defense starts crashing hard on the give every snap, hot route the QB to pull and stretch the edge, since defenders overplaying the dive open up the keep lane. Sequence this play after PA Read or PA Inverted Veer earlier in a drive so linebackers hesitate on run fits, giving your power blocking scheme more room to work downhill.
