Breakdown

Curl Flats out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel shows a two-man route concept on the perimeter with both outside receivers running vertical stems that break down into curls at roughly 10 to 12 yards, while the boundary and field are stretched underneath by flat routes breaking outside toward the sideline off the same stem. The interior stays home to protect the quarterback in a standard pass blocking scheme, giving a clean five-step launch point. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 by settling receivers in the soft spots of the flat and curl windows, with the primary read starting on the curl route to the play side and working down to the flat if the underneath defender sinks too deep.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage; two deep safeties split evenly signal Cover 4 or Cover 2, which invites a throw to the curl sitting between the flat defender and the deep half defender. Watch the flat defender's initial drop; if a linebacker or nickel corner sprints to the flat immediately, that opens a throwing lane behind them to the curl route. Man coverage with a single high safety is the biggest threat to this concept since corners can trail the curl route through its break, so be ready to bail to the flat route quickly if you see press man alignment. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking at the sticks, since a lurk defender can jump the curl route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Watch for delayed blitzes off the edge; if the defense loads the box or the diagram shows a wide box before the snap, expect pressure that shortens the time to work through the full progression.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium or third and medium when you need a defined sit-down throw against zone shells.

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off man or zone; if they show a hard outside shade with safety help over the top, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 and trust the curl to settle in the window.

Hot route the backside curl into a dig or speed out if you diagnose man coverage, since the natural curl break can get sat on by aggressive man corners.

Pair this play with Flanker Curl or Quick Slants in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to expect short zone-beating throws, then hit them with PA Comebacks or PA Shot off the same formation once they start jumping the curl.

Work full field progression from curl to flat on the play side, then reset to the backside curl if both primary reads are covered, since the concept naturally clears out underneath zones.
