Breakdown
PA Comebacks is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel that sells the run fake before attacking the sideline with a three level comeback and dig combo. The outside receivers on both sides break down and comeback toward the sideline at intermediate depth while the inside slot runs a deep dig across the middle, creating a natural high low read against zone corners who bite on the play fake. This is primarily a zone beater since the comebacks exploit corners sinking into their zone drops post play-action, and the primary read progression starts with the boundary comeback route, moves to the field side comeback, and finishes with the deep crossing dig as the outlet against zone drop coverage.
Defensive Reads
Look for corners sitting in soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2 who will bite on the play fake and open running lanes for the comeback breaks. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who crash hard on the run fake leave the underneath windows open for the dig route to work. Man coverage with aggressive press corners is the primary counter since they can jump the comeback break before the receiver turns, this play struggles against Cover 1 or Cover 0 unless the play fake fully freezes the second level. Identify user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field since they can undercut the deep dig route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Check for late rotating safeties post snap, if a single high safety rotates down hard to defend the run fake, the field side comeback becomes the easiest completion.
Usage Tips
Use this on second or third and medium to long situations where defenses expect a dropback pass and are more willing to sell out on the run fake. Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties sitting soft this is a green light since the comebacks will settle in front of retreating zone corners. Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or curl if you are facing man coverage since the double move nature of the comeback route gets jumped easily by aggressive man corners. Pair this play with Inside Zone or Power Read earlier in a drive to condition the defense into keying run action, then punish overaggressive linebacker and safety flow with this shot off the fake. Use play action rollout protection awareness, if the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre snap, consider audibling to a quicker breaking play like Quick Slants instead since the comeback timing needs a clean pocket.
