Breakdown

TE Under is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel that attacks the middle of the field with a drag combo underneath two vertical clear-out routes. The play design shows both outside receivers running Go routes to stretch the defense deep while the inside slot runs an Out to occupy the flat, and the TE runs the Under (drag) route across the formation from one side to the other, crossing underneath the linebackers. This is a man beater against man coverage because the drag creates natural rub traffic and separation against trailing defenders, and it also holds up against zone thanks to the two Go routes clearing out deep zone defenders and opening the middle void. The primary read progression starts with the TE drag underneath, then works to the Out route in the flat, and finally to either Go route on deep shots if the play-action freezes the safeties.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage matchups on the TE, since a linebacker or safety trailing the drag route is an easy throwing window against man beaters like this. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap, since the two Go routes are designed to occupy deep defenders and open the shallow drag underneath. Key the flow of linebackers after the play-action fake, since defenses that stay disciplined and sit on the drag route can jump the route and create a turnover opportunity. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the middle of the field or dropping into a lurk technique, since that threatens the primary drag read and forces a quick progression to the Out or Go routes. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the play-action fake with only one back can leave the quarterback exposed if the protection does not hold up.

Usage Tips

Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers before you read the TE drag, since a hard sell on the run action opens up extra separation on the crossing route.

Check pre-snap for single-high safety looks, since the two Go routes can turn into deep shot opportunities if the safety bites on run action or cheats to one side.

Hot route the backside Go into a Comeback or Curl if you see zone coverage rotating away, giving you a sure-handed option instead of forcing a contested deep ball.

Pair this play with Inside Zone or PA Read earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then dial up TE Under once the defense starts keying run support from the second level.

Best called on early downs or medium yardage situations where the drag route can pick up consistent chunk yardage against overaggressive linebackers.
