Hitch Corners out of Shotgun Ace 12 personnel sends both outside receivers on vertical corner routes that break hard to the sideline, stretching the deep boundary and attacking off the top of the coverage. The two inside receivers (TE or slot) settle into quick hitches for an immediate underneath outlet, while the middle running back releases up the seam as a fourth option against man coverage. This is a man beater built to isolate corners on islands, with the primary read starting at the corner routes for explosive plays before working down to the hitches and the seam runner if the top is taken away.
Watch cornerback depth at the snap, corners playing tight press or shallow zone are vulnerable to the corner route breaking over their head. Key the safeties post-snap, if both safeties bail deep into a two high shell the window for the corner routes shrinks and you should progress to the hitches immediately. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone drops, the underneath hitches sit in soft spots but watch for a user lurk defender jumping the route from the slot or flat zone. Blitz packages that send extra rushers force a quicker decision, so know your protection and be ready to hit the first open hitch rather than holding for the corner routes. If linebackers show man match or the middle runner is spied immediately, that seam release will be taken away, so plan to work outside to the hitches or corners instead.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells since corner routes need soft coverage or a blown assignment to hit for explosive yardage.
Against man coverage look outside first, the corner routes are designed to win on defensive backs who bite on the vertical stem before the break.
Use the hitches as your checkdown against tight zone drops or when the corners are blanketed by capable man corners, especially on third and short.
Hot route the seam runner into a flat route if you see a linebacker spying the middle, this keeps him relevant against zone drops.
Pair this play with Curl Flats or Quick Slants in the same set to condition defenders into sitting on shorter routes before hitting them with the corner shots.
