Read Option out of Shotgun Ace with 12 personnel is a true zone run play built around the mesh point between the QB and HB. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping laterally into their zone blocking scheme while the QB and HB cross paths in the backfield, giving the QB the choice to hand off or pull the ball based on the play side end or OLB's run fit. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no route combos to read: the primary read progression is the QB's mesh read on the edge defender, deciding whether to give the ball to the HB on the zone track or keep it himself.
Pre-snap, key the play side defensive end and any OLB or Mike stacked near the box, since a hard crash toward the HB signals the QB should pull and keep. Watch for a spy or lurking user defender sitting in the mesh area, since that alignment is designed to shut down the QB keep option entirely. Post-snap, if the edge defender stays wide and squeezes the tackle, expect the give to the HB on the zone track to hit clean between the tackles. Defenses that load the box with an extra safety or crash a linebacker downhill on snap can blow up both the give and the keep, so this play struggles against heavy run blitz packages. If the defense shows a two high shell with light box numbers, the zone track give should have a numbers advantage, so key the second level linebacker flow to find the cutback lane.
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has an extra run defender crashed down on the mesh point before you commit to this call.
Use the QB read mechanic manually if your game allows it so you control the mesh decision instead of relying on the CPU logic, especially versus aggressive contain rushers.
This play thrives on early downs in run heavy sets, so mix it with Inside Zone and Power Read from the same Ace set to keep defenders guessing on the mesh point.
Pair it with PA Read or PA Inverted Veer later in a series once the defense starts crashing hard on the zone read fake, turning their aggression into a big play-action shot.
Avoid calling this on obvious long yardage downs since defenses will sit in run support shells and remove the numbers advantage the zone read is designed to create.
