Empty Ace strips the backfield completely and pushes all five eligible receivers onto the line of scrimmage or into the slots, which is what separates it from standard Shotgun sets that keep a back in for protection or checkdowns. The 12 personnel grouping means both tight ends are out in the formation instead of blocking, typically with one aligned tight to the line and the other flexed into a slot or trips surface, while the running back walks out wide as the third receiver to one side. That gives you a five man distribution with a size mismatch built in: linebackers and safeties who slide out to cover a tight end in the slot lose immediately on speed routes, and a 3DRB tagged back split out wide draws either a nickel corner in space or a linebacker who cannot run with him.
Because there is no back to chip or pick up a free rusher, the read is fully pre-snap and post-snap fast. Five out means the defense has to declare coverage with its alignment, so you get clean reads on man versus zone before the ball is even snapped. Empty Ace leans on concepts that punish that declaration: All Go tests a single high safety with four or five vertical stems, Stick and Curl Flats give you quick horizontal answers against zone drops, and U Cross plus Post Wheel Shallow attack man coverage with crossers and rub action from the condensed tight end alignment.
What makes this set more than a pure passing look is the Gadget package. Jet QB Zone, Jet QB Counter, Jet QB Zone Wk, Jet Touch Pass, PA Jet Sweep, and Fake Jet Pass Power all use motion to threaten the edge from an empty shell, which forces defenses to keep a defender honest on the perimeter instead of committing everything to the pass rush. With a mobile quarterback, the QB run game out of Empty Ace is one of the most efficient ways to punish heavy man coverage, since every defender turns their back at the snap and nobody is spying the middle of the field.
Use motion pre-snap on every play to confirm coverage: if a defender follows the motioned tight end or the split out back, you have man and should go straight to U Cross, Post Wheel Shallow, or a hot routed slant, and if defenders stay in place go to Stick, Curl Flats, or Flood
Call Jet QB Zone or Jet QB Counter when your opponent shows heavy man blitz with a vacated middle, especially on second and medium, and slide protection toward the pressure side before the snap
On third and long, All Go with the flexed tight end hot routed to a seam attacks the middle of Cover 3, and Flood gives you the three level answer against a soft zone drop
Always set your protection based on the pre-snap look, since there is no back to help, and identify which side has the extra defender before you commit to the play art read
Keep PA Jet Sweep and Fake Jet Pass Power in the mix once your opponent starts flowing hard to the motion, since the play action hold buys you the extra beat that an empty set does not get from protection
Isolate the 3DRB tagged back on the single receiver side when you see a linebacker across from him, then hot route him to a slant or fade for a free matchup win
