Defensive Reads

Key the backside linebacker and edge defender for scrape exchange discipline, since a disciplined backside player who stays home instead of chasing jet motion will erase the cutback lane. Watch for a crashing defensive end or Sam linebacker who sits on the QB keeper instead of respecting jet motion, which forces the play into the teeth of the zone scheme. Identify run blitzes and A gap pressure pre-snap, since a fast interior blitz can beat the zone steps before the line gets its combo blocks set. Man coverage shells with aggressive linebackers flowing hard to the jet sweep motion are the most exploitable, since it opens the cutback lane behind the flow. Two high safety shells with disciplined linebackers staying square to the QB and reading run keys instead of the motion man will shut this down, especially if the play side contain defender stays patient.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action and freeze the play side edge defender for a split second, which is all the zone blocking scheme needs to seal the alley.
