Shotgun U Off Stack is a 12 personnel look that pushes both tight ends to one side and drops the single receiver into a stack behind the outside man, giving you a condensed formation that still threatens the perimeter. The offset back, hence the "Off" designation, sets up the run action for Inside Zone, Outside Zone, and Mtn Read Option while keeping a clean release lane for the stacked receiver. Compared to the more balanced U sets in Shotgun, the stack alignment is the key differentiator: the inside receiver in the stack cannot be pressed, cannot be bumped off his route, and is nearly impossible to bracket without dedicated pre-snap help.
The two tight end personnel forces the defense into a decision. Base 3-4 or 4-3 nickel personnel means you are running Mtn HB Punch and Inside Zone against lighter boxes, and if the opponent counters with heavier personnel, your tight ends become mismatch targets on Mtn PA Y-Leak and the Mtn Double Under crossing concepts. This is a classic pack-the-box-then-throw-over-it setup, and Madden's zone AI struggles with the Y-Leak release out of a condensed alignment because the flat defender is usually widened by the play-action fake.
Where this set really earns its spot is the RPO package. RPO Alert Out and RPO Zone Alert Screen let you read the box count pre-snap and take the free yards, while the Empty variants (Empty Hitch N Go, Empty Slot Under, Empty Y-Choice Under) give you a shift-based tempo tool: motion the back out, get the defense in a scramble, then attack the stack side with a man beater. The Gadget and 3DRB tags mean you can run this out of multiple personnel packages, so you are not tipping run or pass by the set alone.
Read the box count pre-snap on RPO Alert Out and RPO Zone Alert Screen. If the safety is rotated down and you count six in the box, take the alert throw. If it is a light box with a single high shell, run the zone read.
Against single-high man, go to Empty Hitch N Go or Empty Y-Choice Under and target the inside stack receiver. The stack release plus a hitch and go stem is a reliable man beater with no press risk.
Establish Inside Zone and Mtn HB Punch on early downs before you touch the play-action package. Mtn PA Y-Leak and Mtn PA Switch Flood only pay off once the linebackers are actually flowing to the run.
Use Mtn Double Under against Cover 2 and Cover 4. The underneath crossers work the seam between the flat and hook defenders, and you can hot route the offset back to a flat or angle route as your check down.
Motion the offset back out to create an Empty look on third and long, watch the defense declare man or zone by whether a defender travels, then attack the stack side accordingly with the flood or under concept.
Hot route the outside stack receiver to a slant or drag on tight red zone situations. The traffic created at the stack point naturally rubs off man defenders without triggering an offensive pass interference flag.
