Defensive Reads
Check the edge defender's leverage before the snap since a wide 9 technique or crashing DE tips the keep read in the QB's favor. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the mike and will linebackers step up too fast on the run fake it opens the keep lane outside the tackle box. Man coverage that follows the pre-snap motion man across the formation signals a blitz or man beater vulnerability since the defense loses a spy on the QB keep. Zone shells with two deep safeties tend to leave light boxes, so attack the interior with the give read against a 6 man box. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the QB from depth since that eliminates the keep option and forces the offense into the handoff every time.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.
If the read defender crashes down hard on the RB every time, hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to punish an overaggressive edge defender on the keep.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so the read option looks identical at the snap, forcing linebackers to freeze and misread run fits.
Sequence Mtn Read Option with Mtn PA Y-Leak or Mtn PA Crossers later in a drive once the defense starts crashing the edge, since the play action look off the same stack alignment will hold the safety and open up explosive shots downfield.
