Mtn PA Y-Leak is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun U Off Stack with 12 personnel. The offensive line and backfield sell run action while the Y (leak man, shown in red) releases late from the backfield area on a deep crossing route that stems vertically up the seam, giving him a leak path behind the linebackers. The two stacked receivers to that side run a corner/out combo (yellow), with the outside man pushing vertical and breaking to the corner while the inside receiver runs a shallow out, and the checkdown option releases flat to the boundary side on the blue route. This is a play-action man beater designed to hit the Y-Leak crosser against overaggressive linebacker flow, with the primary read progression starting on the leaking Y up the seam, then working to the corner route, and finally checking down to the flat/checkdown route if everything is covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the strong safety is cheating down into the box, since that signals man coverage or run support that the Y-Leak route can exploit. Watch linebacker eye discipline after the snap: if they crash hard on the run fake, the leak crosser will be wide open in the intermediate middle. Cover 3 with an aggressive underneath zone that squeezes the crosser can shut this down if the flowing linebacker sits in the passing lane. User a lurking linebacker or nickel defender in the middle of the field to jump the Y-Leak route, since that is the primary and most dangerous read. Watch for a corner sitting in the flat pre-snap, as that alignment usually signals a defender ready to jump the corner route or flat concept on the boundary.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or in obvious run-heavy situations like second and short to keep linebackers honest on the play fake.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are sitting shallow expecting run support, the Y-Leak crosser will have a huge window once he clears the box.
If you see man coverage with a single high safety, lead with the Y-Leak read since it is designed to exploit man coverage leverage over the middle.
Use hot routes to adjust the checkdown route into a hook or sit route against zone shells that flood the flat with a cornerback.
Pair this call with Mtn HB Punch or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the run action sells hard and defenders bite on the fake before you dial up Y-Leak.
