Inside Zone from the Shotgun U Off Stack set lines up with 12 personnel, using two stacked receivers to one side and a tight formation with the RB offset in the backfield. The diagram shows a pure zone blocking scheme up front with the offensive line stepping in unison to create running lanes, and the RB path cutting downhill off the play side double team. This is a base zone run play, not a play-action or RPO look, designed to let the runner read the flow of the blocking and pick the best crease based on how the defensive front reacts. The primary read progression starts at the play side double team, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the first read is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Look for linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and stacked tight they are cheating the run fit and you should bounce outside. Identify one high safety shells versus two high, one high often means an extra man in the box so be ready to cut back against overpursuit. Watch for user-controlled defenders crashing down hard off the edge, this is a sign to key the backside cutback lane immediately. This play struggles against gap-heavy fronts with defensive tackles shooting gaps pre-snap, since it disrupts the zone blocking rhythm before the double team can form. Beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that stay honest in their zone run fits, but a heavy blitz package with extra defenders stacked in the box can blow up the play before the line establishes movement.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.
Use the stacked receivers to bait safeties into rotating down, which opens up the cutback lane if the defense overcommits to run support.
Pair this with Outside Zone from the same set to keep defenders guessing on zone flow direction and force linebackers to hesitate on their fits.
Mix in RPO Alert Out or RPO Zone Alert Screen out of the same formation so defenses cannot key run just from the personnel and alignment.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up explosive shots off run action later in the series.
