Outside Zone out of Shotgun U Off Stack is a 12 personnel zone run play with the RB motioning to a stacked alignment behind the slot before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE flowing laterally to establish outside zone blocking angles, with the HB taking a wide track to the edge before pressing upfield off his blockers' hips. The primary read progression is playside cutback lanes: press the edge to force flow, then read the widest zone block (usually the TE or tackle) to decide between bouncing outside or cutting back inside.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive front alignment pre-snap, since a 4-3 or 34 front with an extra linebacker in the box signals a heavier run commitment against zone runs. Key the playside linebacker's first step, if he flows hard outside immediately, expect a strong edge set and look to cut the run back inside. Identify user-controlled defenders near the line of scrimmage, since a spying MLB or DE crashing down the line can blow up the stretch action before the RB presses the edge. Look for safety rotation into the box pre-snap, which indicates run support and should trigger a shift to Inside Zone or a play-action counter later in the drive. Beware nano blitz packages from stacked fronts, since they can beat zone blocking assignments at the snap before the offensive line establishes movement.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion with the stacked HB to identify if the defense shifts linebackers or safeties, which reveals run blitz intentions.
Attack light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders in the box, since outside zone loses value against stacked fronts with extra run defenders.
Hot route the stacked TE into a quick flat or seal block if you see edge pressure numbers advantage for the defense.
Pair this with Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction, then sequence in Mtn Read Option to punish overaggressive edge defenders.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots like Mtn PA Y-Leak later in the series.
