The two receivers to the closed side cross release, with the outside receiver running a deep go and the inside receiver working a corner route off the switch, while the backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field. Underneath, the TE runs a wheel route out of the backfield area up the sideline off a flat fake, and the HB releases into a flat route to the opposite side, giving you a wheel beater against man and a flood concept on the boundary. Primary read progression starts with the TE wheel against man coverage or blown assignment, moves to the switch corner route in the intermediate zone, and finishes with the drag and flat as underneath outlets versus zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if a linebacker or slower defender is aligned over the TE, since that mismatch is exactly what the wheel route is designed to exploit. Watch cornerback depth on the switch release side, tight press alignment often signals man coverage and a clean wheel read. Post-snap, key the flat defender's initial reaction, if he sinks with the HB flat route the TE wheel has a clear lane up the sideline. Against zone coverage, look for the deep half safety rotating over the top, which can squeeze the wheel route and force you to the drag or flat instead. Beware of a lurking linebacker sitting on the crossing routes, since a disciplined zone drop that stays underneath the switch concept can bait a costly interception.

Usage Tips

Check the flat and curl defenders pre-snap to see if the TE wheel will get picked up by a linebacker who can not keep pace vertically.

Use motion or a hot route on the HB flat if the defense shows a clear blitz look, since he becomes your checkdown valve versus pressure.

This play hits hardest against man coverage on third and medium to long, especially when you have identified a linebacker or safety matched on the TE.
