Mtn HB Zone Wk is a weak side zone run out of the Pistol from Tight Y Off Flex, sending the HB to the weak side of the formation behind zone blocking that flows away from the tight end. The offensive line executes a weak zone scheme, double teaming down linemen at the point of attack while the backside tackle and TE seal off backside pursuit, giving the runner a natural cutback lane. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team leverage, then works to the fullback or lead blocker kick out on the edge, and finally the backside cutback lane if the front flows too hard to the play side.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard to the play side flow the cutback lane opens immediately behind the backside tackle and TE. Identify one high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, one high alignments often mean an extra run defender in the box which slows this play down. User the weak side linebacker or the strong safety in the box to spy the cutback lane, this is the primary defender that kills this run if played disciplined. Look for edge defenders squeezing hard, if the play side end crashes down the ball carrier can bounce it outside for extra yardage. Beware overload blitzes from the weak side, if defenders stack the backside gap pre-snap this run loses its natural cutback advantage and should be checked to a pass.

Usage Tips

Run this early in a series to establish tendencies before hitting Mtn PA Boot off the same look since both plays share the weak side flow and backfield action.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If you see a bubble or overshifted front to the strong side, weak zone hits faster because the backside is thinner.

Use the RB hot route sparingly here, this is a designed hit-the-hole run so avoid over-adjusting the blocking assignments pre-snap.

Against stacked boxes with 8 in the box, pair this with RPO Read Flat Wheel to punish defenses selling out on the run.

On second and short or third and short, this play is a strong money down call because the cutback design punishes linebackers who overcommit to the play side flow.
