Cheat Swing Flat is a quick-hitting pass concept out of Pistol Tight Y Off Flex that uses pre-snap motion to create a natural pick and leverage advantage on the boundary side. The diagram shows the motion man running a swing route to the flat while the backfield player runs a shallow drag underneath, with the outside receiver on that side clearing vertically up the seam and the far outside receiver running a deep in-breaking route across the field. This is a man beater built around the motion creating a rub, and the primary read progression starts with the swing route to the flat, then works to the shallow drag if the flat defender squeezes down, with the deep crosser as the outlet against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Check the alignment of the flat defender before the snap, if he is walked up tight to the line expect him to jump the swing route so be ready to reset to the shallow drag. Watch for the motion defender, if a linebacker or safety shifts to shadow the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and the swing route wins immediately. Identify Cover 3 by looking for the corner bailing deep and the safety rotating to the deep middle, this leaves the flat and shallow drag open underneath. Against Cover 2, the deep crossing route on the far side becomes the key read since the corner sitting on the flat route will collapse the space for the swing. Be wary of user linebackers sitting in the shallow drag lane, if the defense shows a mug look at the line, expect a spy or delayed blitz that clogs the underneath throwing lanes.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it is man coverage and the swing route is live immediately.

Hot route the shallow drag into a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting in the underneath zone to give yourself a leverage throw against Cover 3 sink.

This play works best on early downs and short yardage third downs because the swing to the flat is nearly automatic against man coverage and picks up positive yardage against zone.

Pair this play with Cheat HB Zone in your play-calling sequence, since the run action out of the same formation keeps linebackers hesitant to jump the flat route on obvious passing situations.

Against aggressive blitz teams, snap it quickly since the swing route and shallow drag both get the ball out before pressure arrives, neutralizing most user blitzes.
