Mtn PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of the Pistol under Tight Y Off Flex, designed to sell the mountain zone run action before the QB boots to the flat side. The tight end works a deep crosser or corner route while the backside receiver clears out, giving the quarterback a run pass option feel with easy access throws on the move. This is primarily a zone beater since it attacks flat defenders and hook zones vacated by run fits, with the primary read starting on the flat defender to the boot side before working back to the deep crossing route if the underneath defenders sit.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, if he stays home on run fit responsibilities the flat route is open immediately off the boot. Check for a sitting linebacker or nickel defender in the shallow hook zone, since Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells tend to leave a soft window behind the flat and in front of the deep safeties. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the boot lane, aggressive human defenders will often jump the flat throw, so be ready to pump and reset to the crosser or corner route. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high alignments open up the deep corner route as a big play window against Cover 1 or Cover 3. Be wary of overload blitz packages to the boot side, since a fast edge defender can beat the pulling protection and force an early throw before the route develops.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the run action actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check the flat defender before the snap, if a corner or linebacker is sitting soft in the flat area, expect him to jump the boot flat route immediately.

Use the rollout to buy time against exotic pressure looks, since the boot naturally moves the QB away from edge rushers on the play side.

Pair this with HB Zone or Mtn HB Zone Wk earlier in a series so the defense keys run action, making the boot pass hit harder off tendency.

Hot route the tight end into a deeper corner breaking route against single high safety shells to create a natural man beater option off the same play design.
