Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, since linebackers sitting too far downhill in the box get gashed on the cutback lane once the zone blocking climbs to the second level. Key the safety rotation after motion, since a safety who crashes down into the box pre-snap signals run support and opens up cutback opportunities on the backside. If the cornerback follows the motion man man to man, that confirms man coverage and tells the offense the edge defender is isolated in run support with no help over the top. This play struggles against gap or odd fronts that stack extra defenders inside, so a heavy run blitz with linebackers crashing downhill can blow up the zone track before the double teams get set. User the play side linebacker as the lurk defender to squeeze the run lane, since a disciplined user keeping outside contain forces the HB back into a crowded interior.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is in man or zone, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you the run fit is likely soft on that side.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots in this set.
Hot route the fullback or lead blocker to attack the strong side if you see the defense stacking the box on the backside, since the zone blocking naturally flows away from overloaded fronts.
Pair this with PA Cheat Post Comeback or RPO Read Flat Wheel in the same set so the defense has to respect both the inside zone run action and the play-action passing concepts off identical formation and motion.
Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, trust the cutback lane since the zone scheme is designed to create a natural bend away from overpursuit.
