HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of the Pistol Tight Y Off Flex formation with 11 personnel, designed to attack a weak side gap with a zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line steps in unison toward the point of attack while the HB takes a lateral zone read path, pressing the hole and reading the flow of the blocks before deciding to cut back or hit it downhill. This is a pure run play with no play-action or pass options attached, so the primary read progression belongs to the HB: press the line, read the first level double teams, and cut based on which gap the defense vacates.
Defensive Reads
Check the depth of the linebackers pre-snap since stacked or crashing backers signal a run blitz that can blow up the zone scheme if the cutback lane is not found quickly. Look at the defensive line alignment: an over front or 4-3 under can clog the play side gap, forcing the HB to work the backside cutback. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or flowing hard to the play side, since that opens up the opposite gap for a cutback read. This play struggles against gap-exchange stunts and heavy run blitzes that stack the box with eight or more defenders. It performs best against base fronts and light boxes where the zone line can get clean double teams and seal the edge.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance to confirm the front is not overloaded to the play side before the snap. If you see linebackers stacked tight or crashing down hard on flow, be ready to cut this back rather than force it into a clogged gap. This play hits best on early downs (first and second down) when defenses are not selling out on the pass, since the zone blocking needs numbers advantage up front to work.
