The RB reads the play side double teams and picks his lane based on where the defensive line and linebackers flow, with the primary read progression being the play side double team at the point of attack before working to the backside cutback lane if the front over-pursues. This is a zone run scheme designed to create movement on the interior of the defensive line rather than a designated big-play shot, making it a pure ground game staple rather than a man or zone beater in the passing sense.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers stacked tight to the line pre-snap, which signals run blitz and forces you to find the cutback lane immediately. A single high safety pre-snap usually means the defense is selling out against the run with an extra man in the box, so be ready to bounce outside. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and end to see if they are getting doubled cleanly or if a linebacker is filling the gap fast. This play struggles against gap-control defenses and heavy blitz packages that get penetration before the double teams can seal the hole. User-controlled defenders shooting the backside A-gap on contain can blow this up quickly, so recognize that key before committing to a play side lane.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at linebacker depth to confirm the defense is not stacking the box before the snap.
Attack this play against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts where the defensive line is not slanting hard into the play side gap.
Hot route the backside TE into a stalk block versus edge blitzes if you see a defensive end crashing down hard.
