Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play-action fake the middle of the field opens up for the post before the safety can rotate over. Post-snap, key the flat defender or nickel corner on the underneath crosser, if he sinks into a zone drop instead of chasing the route the flat throw is there as an easy checkdown. This play struggles against zone coverages with a deep half safety sitting directly over the post, since that defender can undercut or bracket the route for an interception risk. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal defensive alignment to attack, since the post and comeback combo forces the cornerback to defend two breaking angles at once.
