Cheat HB Double Pass is a trick play out of Pistol Tight Y Off Flex that disguises itself as an outside run before flipping into a halfback pass. Pre-snap motion brings a receiver across the formation, then at the snap the HB takes the pitch and rolls to the flat while the two outside receivers stem vertically before breaking, one on a deep comeback out toward the sideline and the other cutting across the middle on a deep crosser. The offensive line and TE fan out in a sweep style blocking scheme to sell run action, leaving the HB to throw off the edge once he clears the box. This is a designed shot play built to beat aggressive run fits and man coverage, with the primary read progression starting on the deep comeback breaking toward the boundary and coming back to the deep crosser working across the field if the corner sits on the first route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, single high shells with safeties crashing toward the box are the ideal look for this trick play to hit for a big gain. Watch cornerback positioning on both outside receivers, aggressive press or run support corners will bite on the fake and open up the comeback and crossing routes behind them. Post-snap, track linebacker flow toward the sweep action, if the defense flows hard to the perimeter the HB will have a clean lane and time to throw off the edge. Identify any user controlled defender spying the backfield or staying home on the HB, since a disciplined user rushing the edge or dropping into a lurk spot can blow this play up before the routes develop. This play struggles against two high safety shells and zone blitz packages that keep contain on the edge, since the extended blocking scheme cannot hold up long enough against unblocked edge pressure.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs in run heavy personnel counts when the defense has shown a tendency to crash hard on outside zone or sweep looks.

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and safeties into run fits, then check the flow of the second and third level defenders before the snap to confirm they are biting.
