Counter Y out of Pistol Tight Y Off Flex is a power run play that pulls the backside linemen to lead through the hole for the HB, with the offensive line down blocking to the play side while the fullback or tight end kicks out the edge defender. The diagram shows the full offensive line engaging at the point of attack with the HB taking a counter step away from the flow before cutting back downhill through the vacated lane. This is a pure run scheme with no route concept attached, so the primary read progression is the backside pulling guard's kick out block first, then the lead blocker through the hole, and finally the HB's cutback lane if the front side gets clogged.
Key the linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line will overreact to initial flow and get gashed by the counter cutback. Watch for a Mike linebacker on a run blitz call, since Counter Y's pulling guard needs a clean lane and an unblocked blitzer through the A gap can blow up the play at the mesh point. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under front with the strong safety crashing down, this alignment struggles to account for the counter's misdirection and gives up explosive cutback runs. Look for edge defenders squeezing hard down the line, if the kick out blocker can't reach the edge the HB has to cut it up inside immediately rather than bouncing outside. User controlled defenders who diagnose counter action early and stay home in the backside cutback lane are the biggest threat to this play, so avoid calling it back to back against a defense that has already sniffed it out.
Run this out of a run heavy personnel look to keep linebackers honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
Check the box count pre-snap and only run Counter Y into light boxes with six or fewer defenders to avoid getting gang tackled at the mesh point.
Use manual motion or a shift to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction before the snap so the counter action away from that flow hits a bigger cutback lane.
Pair this with PA Cheat Post Comeback and RPO Read Flat Wheel from the same set so defenders keying run funnel into the same look but get burned by play-action or the RPO read.
On third and short or goal line, call Counter Y after establishing HB Zone earlier in the drive so linebackers have already committed to fast flow reads.
