Mtn Pin Pull Sweep is a gap scheme run play out of the Pistol Tight Y Off Flex set that pulls the backside guard and tackle around the edge to lead block for the HB, while the play side line pins down on the defensive front. This is a run play built to attack the edge with numbers, using the pin blocks to seal interior defenders and the pulling linemen to kick out or wrap on force players. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team and edge defender, then moves to the pulling lead blocker to identify the alley defender before deciding whether to bounce outside or cut up through the wash.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety alignment, single high shells with the strong safety cheating into the box are vulnerable since the extra defender still has to beat the pulling blockers to the edge. Identify the play side cornerback leverage, if he is playing outside contain or squatting in a hard flat zone the sweep can bounce all the way outside for a big gain. Post-snap, key the defensive end and outside linebacker reaction to the pin block, disciplined edge defenders who stay square and hold the corner will blow this play up before the pull gets there. Look for a fast flowing weak side linebacker or user-controlled defender flying downhill through the wash, that lurk threat is the primary reason to cut the run back against the grain. Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes struggle to fit this run cleanly, but a stacked front with a run blitz called to the play side edge can beat the pullers to the corner and force a negative play.

Run this out of neutral personnel looks so the defense cannot pre-diagnose run based on formation tendencies.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this sweep has a numbers advantage to the edge.

Use the pulling linemen as your visual key, stay tucked behind them and let their blocks dictate whether you bounce or press the crease.

Pair this with Cheat HB Zone or HB Zone Wk in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot key pulling linemen versus zone steps, keeping linebackers frozen on the mesh point.

Best used on early downs or short yardage when defenses are likely to play base personnel and sell out on interior gaps, since the edge width punishes teams that stack the box.
