Overview

Dime Normal is the baseline six defensive back alignment in the Dime formation, running Dime 4-1-6 personnel with four down linemen, a single linebacker, and six defensive backs. Where Dime sub-packages shift bodies into the box or spread corners into pure quarters looks, Normal keeps a conventional two high shell with the lone linebacker stacked over the guard/center area, which gives you the cleanest presentation for disguising both spot drop zones and match coverage. That single linebacker is the entire run fit inside, so the set is built to take away intermediate and deep passing windows rather than hold up between the tackles.

The play list here is unusually deep for a Dime set, and that is the real selling point. You get the full spot drop menu (Cover 2 Man, Cover 3 Cloud, Cover 4 Quarters, Tampa 2, Cover 6, Cover 2 Hard Flat) alongside true match concepts in Cover 3 Buzz Match, Cover 4 Palms, and 3 Double Buzz, so you can show the same two high look and rotate into completely different post snap rules. Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 3 Buzz Press let you sit on quick outs and slants at the line, while Cover 1 Contain protects against scrambling quarterbacks who like to escape the pocket after the coverage rolls.

Pressure comes from the secondary since there is only one linebacker to send. Dbl Safety Blitz, SS Blitz 3, DB Blitz 0, LB Blitz 1, Dime Blitz 3, and Overload 3 Show 2 all attack from angles offensive linemen do not slide toward by default, which is how you generate free runners without giving up a coverage defender in the box. Six defensive backs also means you can match slot receivers and tight ends with actual coverage athletes instead of leaving a linebacker isolated on a seam route, and Overload 3 Show 2 in particular lets you present two high before dropping into a three deep shell behind a five man overload.

Strengths

  • Personnel mismatch elimination: six defensive backs let you cover slots, tight ends, and receiving backs with real coverage athletes instead of leaving a linebacker on a seam or option route.
  • Coverage disguise depth: Cover 2 Man, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 4 Palms, Cover 6, and 3 Double Buzz all present a similar two high shell pre snap, so the quarterback cannot confirm the rotation until after the snap.
  • Secondary pressure without losing coverage: Dbl Safety Blitz, SS Blitz 3, DB Blitz 0, and Overload 3 Show 2 create free runners from angles the offensive line slide protection does not account for.
  • Match coverage against deep crossers and verticals: Cover 3 Buzz Match and Cover 4 Palms carry vertical routes and pattern match crossers that would tear open standard spot drop shells.
  • Tampa 2 and Cover 2 Hard Flat give you two very different answers to flood and curl flat concepts out of the same formation, with the hard flat variant sitting directly on quick outs and hitches.

Weaknesses

  • One linebacker in the box means inside runs, quarterback draws, and single back power out of heavy sets gash this set if you get caught in it on second and medium.
  • Blocked or overwhelmed pressure packages leave you extremely thin: if Dbl Safety Blitz or DB Blitz 0 does not get home, you are asking man coverage defenders to hold up with no help underneath.
  • The middle of the field is soft in the spot drop calls, so drag, dig, and shallow cross combos hit the vacated linebacker area before the closest defender can user close.
  • Play action and rollouts pull the lone linebacker out of position immediately, and opponents who diagnose Dime personnel will motion into unbalanced looks to seal the edge.
  • Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 3 Buzz Press are vulnerable to press beaters and outside release fades if your corners lack the man coverage and press ratings to hold the line.

Usage Tips

Call this set on third and seven or longer, or when the offense shows four or five wide receivers, and let the coverage variety do the work rather than committing to pressure every snap.

Rotate between Cover 4 Palms and Cover 3 Buzz Match from the same alignment: both start with a two high presentation, so pre snap reads give the quarterback nothing while post snap rules change completely.

User the lone linebacker or a robber safety over the middle to close drag and dig windows manually, since the play art will not cover that area on its own in the spot drop calls.

Save DB Blitz 0 and Dbl Safety Blitz for obvious empty or shotgun passing situations, and mix in Overload 3 Show 2 when you want the same pressure look with three deep behind it.

Use Cover 1 Contain against scrambling quarterbacks so your ends stay home instead of getting beat on designed quarterback escapes out of the pocket.

Manually shade coverage underneath and press your outside corners before switching to Cover 2 Hard Flat to smother quick out and hitch route combos on third and short.
