The three deep corners and safety carry the deep thirds while the underneath zone defenders (the four red arrows) spill out to cover the flats and hook/curl areas, with the Mike backer flowing to the middle hole. The blitz creates a four man rush disguised out of a two high shell pre-snap, making it an effective zone pressure call against both man beater route combos and quick game passing concepts, since the underneath defenders squeeze the short and intermediate throwing lanes while the deep thirds stay honest over the top.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: if the strong safety is creeping toward the line of scrimmage, that tells the offense a blitz is coming, so disguise it late. This call beats quick game concepts like slants and hitches because the underneath zone defenders squeeze passing lanes while the blitz forces an early throw. It struggles against play-action rollouts and RPOs that attack the vacated strong safety zone, since the blitzer leaves a soft spot in the intermediate area behind him. Post-snap, watch for the running back or tight end releasing into the flat where the strong safety used to sit, since that is the primary hot route beater against this pressure. Man beater route combos with deep crossers can exploit the seam between the deep third corners and the underneath zone drops if the blitz does not get home quickly, so time the rush to disrupt the quarterback's first read.
Usage Tips
Show a two high safety look before the snap to disguise the strong safety blitz and bait the quarterback into thinking it is Cover 2 or Cover 4.
Use this on obvious passing downs like second and long or third and medium when offenses expect a drop back concept, since the extra rusher forces quicker decisions.
Pair this with Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 3 Cloud in your play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key on the blitz look every time you show single high shell tendencies.
User the strong safety blitzer if the offensive line slides protection away from him, or spy the middle hook zone defender if you suspect a quarterback scramble or a delayed crosser.
Avoid calling this against heavy trips or bunch formations where the underneath zone defenders can get picked off by natural rub routes, since it stretches the shallow zone coverage thin.
