Breakdown

Overload 3 Show 2 is a Dime 4-1-6 blitz package that shows a two-deep shell pre-snap before rotating into Cover 3 zone coverage behind an overloaded pressure package. The diagram shows three underneath defenders crashing hard downhill off the same side while the lone linebacker and both outside corners sink into deep thirds, with the slot defenders working short zone drops or man mirror on the flanks. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise the rush and confuse protection sliding, and the primary read for the pass rush is the overloaded side where the offense is least likely to have extra blockers set.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the running back checking into a hot route or quick screen toward the overloaded side, since that is the built-in answer to zone pressure. Key the quarterback's eyes right after the snap: if he stares at the sideline flat, jump the route with your user-controlled zone defender sinking to that third. This call is vulnerable to quick game and hitches thrown away from the overload since the backside corner is isolated in a deep third with no immediate help. Identify pre-snap if the offense has trips or bunch formations to the overload side, which can create natural picks and rubs that beat the underneath blitzers before they get home. Look for offenses that empty the backfield against this call, since removing the extra blocker forces your overload rush to win one-on-one immediately or the coverage gets exposed for too long.

Usage Tips

Show this look on early downs when you want to bait the quarterback into thinking Cover 2 is coming, then let it rotate to Cover 3 after the snap.

Use the overload side blitz on third and medium situations where quarterbacks are trained to throw quickly into what looks like a two deep shell.

Mix this with Cover 2 Man and Cover 4 Quarters from the same set so your pre-snap disguise stays consistent and quarterbacks cannot key off safety depth alone.

User the deep middle defender if you see a crosser or dig route coming from the overloaded side, since that is the first throwing window offenses attack against zone pressure.

Pair this call with Dime Blitz 3 or SS Blitz 3 in your play-calling sequence to keep offenses guessing between straight Cover 3 drops and full-out pressure with the same defensive personnel.
