Breakdown

DB Blitz 0 is a Dime 4-1-6 zero blitz that sends five defenders after the quarterback while leaving six defenders in press or tight man coverage across the field. The diagram shows all six coverage defenders (X icons) aligned man to man on every eligible receiver with no deep safety help, while the four defensive linemen and the lone linebacker (square icons) crash downhill immediately at the snap. This is a pure man beater killer designed to win with a fast interior push before the quarterback can hit his first read, so the primary progression for the defense is simply winning one on one leverage at the snap and closing the pocket before any route develops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, confirm the offense has not left extra blockers in max protect, since that numbers advantage neutralizes the free rushers and gives receivers time to beat man coverage. Watch running back alignment and depth, a back cheating toward the line of scrimmage signals a check release or screen designed to counter the blitz with numbers at the second level. Post-snap, track the quarterback's eyes immediately to the shortest route in the concept, since sight adjust throws to the flat or a quick out are the fastest way to beat zero coverage before the rush arrives. This look is exposed by any scheme using deep crossing routes or rub concepts that create natural picks against man coverage, so respect double moves and be ready to peel off if your man breaks free. Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Buzz Match from the same set are safer calls against spread empty formations that are built to exploit zero coverage's lack of deep help.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and long or in obvious passing situations where the offense is likely to empty the backfield or spread four plus receivers wide, since zero coverage struggles most against extra blockers staying in to protect.

Check pre-snap for a running back or tight end releasing late as a check release blocker, that is the biggest hot route counter to this blitz and you may need to spy or adjust your rush lane.

User the middle linebacker or a slot corner on a shifty slot receiver or running back since they are the most common outlet for a quick pass beating the blitz.

Disguise this look by showing Cover 2 Man or Cover 1 Contain from the same Dime package pre-snap, then swap to DB Blitz 0 to keep quarterbacks guessing on which underneath defenders are blitzing.

Avoid calling this on early downs against play-action heavy offenses since the deep shots off max protect looks can gash a defense with zero deep help.
