Overview

Single Mug is the Dime set built around disguise. The lone linebacker (the SUBLB) walks up and mugs the A-gap next to the NT, so every play shows the same five-man pressure look before the snap. The 4-1-6 personnel pairs four down linemen (RLE, RDT, NT, RRE) with one linebacker and six defensive backs, including a dedicated slot corner (SLCB). Standard Dime sets keep the linebacker at normal depth, which lets the quarterback read coverage from the second level. Single Mug takes that read away. Against a mugged backer, the QB cannot tell whether the SUBLB is rushing, spying, dropping into a hook, or bracketing a back until the ball is snapped.

The play list is what gives this set its value. From one alignment you can call Cover 1 Hole and Cover 1 Robber Press, bracket calls like Bracket Switch Willie and Double Bracket, true zone looks like Tampa 2, Cover 4 Palms and Cov 3 Buzz Show 1, and simulated or real pressure through 1 LB Dog, Blitz Tex 3, DB Blitz Tex 3, Dime Blitz 2, Dbl Safety Blitz and DB Blitz. The Tex stunts use the RDT and NT to twist interior protection while the mugged backer freezes the center. That creates free runners through the A and B gaps, which slide protection struggles to pick up.

Against passing offenses, Single Mug takes away the concepts that beat base Dime. The SLCB keeps a true corner on the slot receiver, so option routes and slot fades lose their mismatch. The brackets double the offense's top target, whether that is an elite tight end split wide or a Y-iso slot. Hot routes like quick slants and drags into the middle get squeezed by a defender who is already at the line and can drop straight into the passing lane. In third and long and two minute situations, this is one of the best ways to force a hurried decision without giving up cushion.

Strengths

The mugged SUBLB creates constant A-gap ambiguity, forcing the offense to slide protection or keep a back in, which removes a route runner from every concept
The same pre-snap shell covers Cover 1, Cover 2 Man, Cover 4 Palms, Tampa 2 and six blitz variations, so opponents cannot reliably audible out of pressure or into a zone beater
Bracket Switch Willie and Double Bracket take away an offense's top receiver or tight end on third down, shutting down Y-iso, Texas and option routes that normally beat Dime man
Blitz Tex 3 and DB Blitz Tex 3 use RDT and NT stunts to overload the interior line, creating fast free rushers that punish long-developing mesh, dig and deep crossing combos
Six defensive backs with a dedicated SLCB remove linebacker-on-slot mismatches, so quick hot routes like slants, stick and outs run into real coverage players

Weaknesses

Only one linebacker and a light box make inside zone, duo and draw plays dangerous, especially when the SUBLB blitzes and vacates the second level
The mugged look is well known, and a patient QB can check to a quick screen, RB swing or a slide protection audible that neutralizes the A-gap threat
Cover 1 Robber Press and Cover 1 Hole leave true one-on-one matchups outside, so an elite X receiver running a fade or a back-shoulder read can beat press without safety help
When the SUBLB drops from the mug, the hook zone is late to depth, and deep in-breakers or dig routes behind him can open against Tampa 2 and Cov 3 Buzz Show 1
The smaller defensive front can be moved by heavy personnel, so staying in this set against 12 or 21 personnel invites power run and play-action shots

Usage Tips

Use Single Mug on third and 6 or longer and in two minute drill situations, where the run threat is low and the offense has to hold the ball long enough for your pressure disguise to work

Mix a zone call like Cover 4 Palms or Tampa 2 with the mugged look on drives where you have blitzed, so the QB's quick hot route throws into dropping defenders and turn into interceptions

User the SUBLB or a deep safety on non-blitz calls: from the mug, drop into the middle hook to take away slants and digs, which is the main answer offenses use against this front

When you see a trips or bunch alignment with a dominant slot, call Bracket Switch Willie or Double Bracket, then shade coverage toward the strength to take away the primary read

If the offense motions a back out to empty, blitz with Dbl Safety Blitz or Dime Blitz 2, because empty protection cannot account for both the mugged backer and the extra DB pressure
