Cover 2 Man is a Dime 4-1-6 defensive call out of the Single Mug front that pairs man coverage underneath with two deep safeties splitting the field. The diagram shows five underneath defenders in man alignment (the four red-arrow blitz threats dropping into man carry along with the two X defenders at second level) while two deep safeties rotate to the outside thirds, sinking into the deep halves to eliminate vertical shots. This is a hybrid man beater and zone beater killer designed to shut down four verticals and switch releases while still holding two deep defenders over the top, forcing the quarterback to work the underneath throwing lanes first before progressing to deep sideline routes.
Defensive Reads
Watch the two deep safeties at snap, if they immediately widen and stay high it confirms the two deep halves shell and tells you verticals are covered. Key the underneath defenders' initial jump, true man coverage will have them mirror receiver releases immediately rather than sitting in a zone drop. This shell is vulnerable to quick out and speed out combos to the flat since the underneath defenders in man can be beaten by sharp breaking routes if they bite on double moves. Look for rub routes and pick concepts designed to spring receivers open against man, since man coverage lacks natural zone help against traffic near the line. Post-snap, if a receiver stems inside and the safety does not rotate down quickly enough, that is the throwing window offenses will try to exploit against this two deep shell.
Usage Tips
Call this out of Single Mug when you expect play-action rollouts or shot plays that try to attack single-high looks, since the two deep safeties take away the go routes.
Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases that try to create natural picks against your man defenders, and use press or bump technique to disrupt the timing.
Combine this with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber Press earlier in a series so the offense sees single-high shells, then switch to this two-safety shell late to disguise the rotation and bait a bad throw.
Use this on third and medium to third and long situations where the offense is likely to run a route combo with in-breaking routes, since your underneath defenders in man have inside help support from the safeties.
Mix in Dime Blitz 2 or 1 LB Dog from the same set to keep the same pre-snap picture while dialing up pressure, making it harder for the quarterback to identify man versus blitz before the snap.
